A custom GPT is a specialist version of ChatGPT built for a defined purpose. Instead of explaining the role, reference material and rules each time, you configure that experience once and make it available to yourself or others.
On the web, open GPTs, to use specialists created by OpenAI, other builders or your organisation. Read the description and conversation starters before trusting the name. A GPT is only as sound as its instructions, knowledge and connected services.
Paid users can select Create and build conversationally or use the editor. Give the GPT a narrow job. Add instructions for how it should work, knowledge files it may rely on, useful starting prompts, and only the capabilities it needs. Test difficult examples in Preview before you share it.
Two boundaries matter. Each GPT conversation starts fresh: it does not use your saved memory, custom instructions or previous chats. And if the GPT connects to an external app or API, some of your input may go to that service. Use connections you trust.
Choose a custom GPT when you want a dedicated specialist experience. Choose a Project when you want one body of work to retain its own chats and files. Start narrow, test it, and improve it from real use.
