Hi, I’m Mel. This is Grok, xAI’s assistant. It can chat, search, work with files, create images and speak with you. What makes it different is its close connection to X and the live public conversation happening there. That makes Grok fast and interesting, but not automatically right.

At grok.com, the experience starts like a familiar chat. Ask a question, brainstorm, draft something or attach material for Grok to examine. There is also a link to Imagine, the creative side of the product, which we will come to shortly. The free option gives you the core experience within usage limits. Start with the job you want done and give Grok the context it needs.

Grok’s distinctive strength is that it can search public posts on X as well as the wider web. That is useful when a story is moving quickly, or when you want to know what people are arguing about. But those are two different jobs: finding the conversation, and establishing what happened. Ask Grok to separate confirmed facts, reported claims and public reaction, then open the evidence behind anything you plan to act on.

Grok is designed to feel more informal and personality-forward than most assistants. You can ask for a playful answer, a direct answer or a restrained professional tone. That makes the conversation engaging, but style is not substance — a confident joke can still carry a weak claim. For work, ask for neutral language, labelled uncertainty and visible sources.

Chat is only one part of Grok. You can upload documents, images, spreadsheets and code for analysis. On supported devices, voice turns the exchange into a spoken conversation. And Imagine is the creative workspace, which is worth a closer look. On the free option, use one capability at a time and expect heavier tasks to reach a limit sooner.

Imagine is where Grok makes and edits pictures. Describe what you want, choose a still image or a short video, and set the shape of the frame. You can also start from a photo you already have. Generated images are invented, so do not use one where a photograph is needed.

Grok is free to start, and paid plans mainly raise capacity. The useful question is whether the free workflow helps you. Try a current-information question, a file task and a creative task. If you keep running into limits, the paid boundary becomes relevant. Until then, free is enough to learn the product.

Check the data settings before using Grok for regular work. On grok.com, you can choose whether new conversations help improve the model, and separately whether X data personalises your experience. Private Chat keeps a conversation out of your history and model training, and xAI says it is removed within thirty days, subject to legal and safety exceptions. Grok inside X has its own settings. Whichever surface you use, do not enter confidential or sensitive material.

Grok is most useful when you treat the live conversation as a lead. First, separate what is confirmed from what is merely repeated. Second, open the sources and see whether you have a public post, a news report or the original evidence. Third, verify anything that could affect money, health, law or safety. Grok can shorten the route to a source. It cannot make a noisy source dependable.
